Governor Sean Parnell Names Education Commissioner Michael Hanley

JUNEAU -- Gov. Sean Parnell has approved the appointment of an Anchorage principal as Alaska's new education commissioner.

Michael Hanley will replace Larry LeDoux, who resigned. Hanley was selected by the state Board of Education and Early Development, and Parnell signed off on the pick Friday.

The governor's office says Hanley has been principal at Kincaid Elementary School since 2005; before that, he was a teacher with the Anchorage School District. Hanley has a master's degree in education from the University of Alaska Anchorage.

The department oversees public schools and runs Mt. Edgecumbe High School in Sitka. It includes the division of libraries, museums and archives; the professional teaching practices commission; and state council on the arts.
